1993 Dodge Dakota No Overdrive Fix

Losing your overdrive in a 91 - 93 Dodge Dakota is pretty common. Your truck will run at 3000 RPM's at 45 MPH. You are ok driving around town, but you will use fuel really bad. If you drive on the interstate too much you might be replacing a tranny pretty soon.

It's pretty unlikely your O/D switch will go bad. If it lights up, it's probably working.

You need to get under your truck and first check the wire's going to your speed sensor. See pic below to see where the speed sensor is located.

If you have bare wires showing on your wiring harness, remove the harness and fix it with soder and shrink wrap. Retape the harness and tie out of the way from the front driveshaft.

After you hook your harness back up and you still don't have overdrive, it's time to change your speed sensor. You can use a adjustable wrench to remove it.

Your speed sensor should look like this:

This Speed sensor is getting harder to find. You can get it at Amazon here. That is the cheapest I have found it. This should fix your overdrive issue and it's the cheapest place to start.

If you still do not have overdrive after this, then you may have to replace the shift solenoid in which you need to drop the pan and remove the valve body to get to it. 90% of the time the
speed sensor wiill fix your O/D issue.
